CREATING BOUNDARIES FOR YOUR SUMMER

We are in our second week of summer vacation. So much fun ahead. Yet, I know if I do not create boundaries around our summer my business will suffer, my kids will get out of sorts and I will feel unproductive in ALL areas.

Recently I read that giving our kids boundaries is like a security guard turning the knob on a door to check to make sure that it is locked. He turns the knob, hoping it is locked.

I know that my kids will be turning my knob all summer to make sure I have the doors locked. Locked doors (boundaries) give them feelings of being safe and secure. They may not respond in a way that reflects that, but I think we all know it to be true.

So this summer my kids and I set boundaries around......

- MY BUSINESS SCHEDULE

I'm setting up specific work hours. This will allow my kids to know I am here for them, but that I also need to make money so we can have the fun we plan on having. This models to them responsibility, priorities and goal setting.

- OUR PLAY TIME

We are planning at least one day a week of exploring new areas in Colorado Springs. They are excited for the adventure. We also have set up specific mini family vacations and camps. This gives my kids the knowledge that there will be plenty of free time for sleeping and playing, but fun is in store and there isn't just all this open time with boredom in store.

- OUR RESPONSIBILITY TIME

Kids need to be part of taking care of their home and family life. Participating in the responsibilities of taking care of what they have been given models responsibility. There are so many lazy kids in this world. To find one that has a good work ethic is rare. To teach them to work is giving them a gift.....not infringing on their rights.

Create boundaries and enjoy your summer!!

RECIPE

Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus
(My new summer favorite!)

Recipe ingredients:

4 cloves garlic
1 tsp salt
3 tablespoons tahini paste
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 (15.5 ounce) cans garbanzo beans, drained
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained
1/4 cup finely shredded fresh basil

2 tablespoons olive oil
1/8 teaspoon paprika

Recipe directions:

1. Place garlic, salt, tahini, and lemon juice into a food processor; process until smooth. Pour in the garbanzo beans and 1/2 cup olive oil; process until smooth again, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. Once smooth, add the sun-dried tomatoes, and pulse until they have been chopped to very small pieces and are incorporated into the hummus. Finally, add the basil, and pulse a few times until mixed in.

2. Spread the hummus into a shallow serving dish and make a few decorative grooves on top. Refrigerate at least 1 hour, then drizzle with 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with paprika before serving.

Serve with warmed pita bread or crackers. Makes a great lunch or snack!
